A friend is considering a mural for a huge entryway, but cannot decide between buying a pre-made mural or hiring an artist.

I didn't know you could buy a "mural in a box" for homes. I have seen stick on murals in offices, and an office wall is really no different than one inside a home, but using a stick on mural in a home still seems tacky to me.

Is it simply cheaper to buy a mural that goes up like wallpaper, or might my friend not only save money, but also be happier having an artist actually paint a scene?

Chances are you could probably find a freelance artists willing to do it for cheap. I'd recommend asking for samples of their work first and at least holding back half the payment until being able to see finished product.

I do agree though stick on murals do seem awfully tacky for in the home. I could see in the Dr.'s office or a nursery or small childs room but not in any public area of the house. I definitely think she would be happier with the real thing. Then it would be unique as well.

I would go with an artist. What happens if you get the mural and don't like the look of it because it is a stickon?
I think that an artists mural would be unique and make the room special.

I would have thought that getting an artist in would be expensive..but I could be wrong, I have never really looked into it.

If it were my choice, I would much rather have the artist. That way I could give him/her ideas of styles and colours that would make the piece unique and exclusive to my home.

I think pre made murals are generally better. Pre-made murals often depict fantasy lands, landscapes, animals or famous paintings. Custom painted murals can depict whatever the person who commissioned the mural wants or whatever the artist wants.

I wonder if both couldn't be used?

The mural could be blended into a background created by an artist.

Has anyone ever done this?

What do you think?
