Making a Patio

My husband and I have been debating for the last couple of years on how we can go about making a patio off of our back deck. Our neighbors did one on their own by digging up the area, placing sand and then putting bricks in the sand. We are worried by doing this it may shift and become unlevel. Anyone ever made their own patio? Do you think cement would be a better option?

You could dig it out and put hard core or concrete then that way there would not be any movement. This should give you a firm base to lay the sand on and then the slabs on top.
