The entry to our home is right i nto the living room. This isn't unusual but I would like to create an entry way of some sort, to keep cold air from blowing into the whole room, and to block the view of our interior from people standing at the front door.

What ever we do has to be fairly simple and not require any heavy construction.

Any ideas?

What about a screen hung on cables that run from ceiling to floor?

All you have to do is find the studs in the ceiling and floor to attach the cables by drilling small holes.

I bet the screen could function as artwork at the same time!

Would such an entry way require special insulation to eliminate drafts? Or would this be a needless expense?

I lived in a house like that once. You have two options, either build a small entrance way on the outside, or use up a little of your living room space and shut off a small square area with plasterboard walls and a door.

You can hang some screen clothes or curtains over your entry way. Most of the time people uses curtains to protect privacy of their rooms and house.

If you don't want to add on to your house, why not just use the back entrance when it is cold outside. This will eliminate the drafts.
Other than that, I would suggest building on a little entrance area. It could even be closed so you have to walk threw the door to the entrance way and then another door to the living room. This would definitely keep the draft away and give your visitors a place to take off their shoes without making a mess in your living room.
