I am seriously thinking about getting rid of my gas stove and putting in an electric one. I was wondering if anybody has done this process? Is this something I could do on my own or do I need to have the gas company here?

I think this is an easy thing. Many people I know have switched over to electric from gas but electric is slightly costlier than gas.

Here in Thailand we still use gas bottles as there is no central gas. Its very easy to install a new cooker.

Gas engineer to cap off your gas supply safely and an electrician to install a seperate cooker circuit. You cannot run an electric cooker from a ring main (plug). It has to have its own circuit because of the load.
You'll probably find capping off your own gas supply and installing a cooker circuit yourself are both illegal and about as dangerous as it gets if you don't know what you're doing...
